Michael Tubbs is the special adviser to California Gov. Gavin Newsom for economic mobility and opportunity. He is also the founder of the organizations Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, End Poverty in California and Tubbs Ventures, an investment firm.
In 2016, Tubbs was elected mayor of Stockton, California, at 26 years old, making him the youngest mayor of any major city in American history. He also was the city’s first African American mayor.
As mayor, Tubbs was lauded for his leadership and innovation. He raised more than $20 million to create Stockton Scholars, a universal scholarship and mentorship program for Stockton students. Additionally, he established the first mayor-led guaranteed income pilot program in the country.
